What Does MOQ Mean in Custom Packaging? A Practical Guide for Buyers

By KUBO Paper · · 2 min read

MOQ stands for Minimum Order Quantity — the smallest number of units a factory will produce in one run. In custom paper packaging, MOQs typically range from 500 to 5,000 pieces depending on the product type and how much customization is involved.

Why does MOQ exist at all? Because setup, not printing, drives the cost. Before a single box is made, the factory prepares printing plates, cuts custom dies, mixes ink, and sets up the gluing line. That setup cost is fixed: producing 300 boxes or 3,000 boxes costs nearly the same to prepare. The MOQ is simply the point where the setup cost per unit stops being unreasonable.

How small brands work with MOQs

First, simplify your first run. Fewer colors, standard structures, and shared die formats reduce setup cost, which brings the MOQ down with it. Second, consider starting with one SKU instead of a full product line. Third, ask about semi-custom options — a standard box size with your logo printed can cut the minimum dramatically compared to a fully bespoke structure.

At KUBO Paper we produce rigid boxes from 500 pcs and folding cartons from 1,000 pcs, precisely because many of our clients are testing a new market and cannot afford to warehouse a container of boxes.

FAQ

Can I mix designs within one MOQ?

Usually yes, within limits. Since the printing plates differ per design, mixing two designs typically means paying two setups. Some factories will split one sheet layout between two smaller designs, effectively sharing the run — worth asking before you order.

Is a lower MOQ always more expensive per unit?

Yes, noticeably. Setup cost spread over 500 units is much heavier than over 5,000. Expect per-unit prices at MOQ to be 30–60% higher than at mid volumes. That premium is often worth it for a market test — you can reorder at better pricing once the design proves itself.
