Packaging Lead Times Explained: From Quote to Delivered

By KUBO Paper · · 2 min read

"Can I get it in two weeks?" is the first question every new client asks, and the honest answer depends on four phases. Here is what each really takes when nothing goes wrong — and where timelines actually slip.

Phase 1: Quoting — 1–2 days

A factory that replies to a complete spec within 24 hours is normal. Quotes stall when specs are incomplete: no dimensions, no quantity, no target market. A one-page spec sheet is the fastest schedule-saver you own.

Phase 2: Sampling — 7–12 days

Structural samples: 3–5 days. Full pre-production samples with real printing: 7–10 days, plus 3–5 days international courier. Allow one revision round in your plan — first samples reveal things no PDF can.

Phase 3: Mass production — 10–20 days

Typical runs of 5,000–50,000 units: 10–15 days. Larger volumes, heavy finishing (foil, spot UV, lamination), or peak season (September–November, pre-holiday) push toward 20. Book capacity early for Q4 — October is already full for many factories.

Phase 4: Shipping — the variable

Express courier: 3–5 days, expensive, fine for samples and small runs. Air freight: 5–8 days. Sea freight: 25–40 days to the US West Coast or Northern Europe, plus customs clearance. Sea is the default for volume; plan 5+ weeks door-to-door.

A realistic first-order timeline: 2–3 weeks sampling and revisions, 2–3 weeks production, 5–6 weeks sea shipping — about 10 weeks from first contact to boxes on your shelf. Compress it by approving artwork fast, choosing standard structures for v1, and starting before peak season.

FAQ

Can factories really rush production?

Modestly. Overtime and scheduling can compress 15 days to 10, at a premium. But rushed QC is where quality slips — better to start earlier than to skip inspection.

What causes the worst delays in practice?

Unapproved artwork (weeks of email), late color approval, and bookings colliding with Chinese New Year — factories pause 2–3 weeks and logistics back up around it. Plan CNY and Q4 deliberately.
