The Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) logo on a box says the paper came from responsibly managed forests — but the mechanism behind that claim is what brands actually need to understand. FSC is not a property of paper; it is a property of the entire chain that handled it.
How the system works
Every company in the chain — forest, pulp mill, paper mill, converter (your packaging factory), and sometimes the trader — must hold FSC Chain-of-Custody (CoC) certification. Each certified company tracks certified inputs through its production and passes the claim forward in paperwork. If one link is uncertified, the product cannot carry the FSC label, even if the raw paper was certified.
So when you order FSC packaging, what you're really buying is: certified paper + a certified factory that kept it segregated and documented. Your factory provides the FSC claim on invoices and a CoC code — that documentation is the audit trail behind the logo you print.
The three label types
- FSC 100% — entirely from certified forests. Rarer and pricier.
- FSC Recycled — 100% reclaimed fiber.
- FSC Mix — certified fiber blended with recycled and/or controlled wood. The most common and most affordable; most "FSC packaging" you see is Mix.
Using it as a brand, correctly
The logo may only be printed with your factory's authorization under their CoC — brands don't buy the logo, they license the claim through the supply chain. Greenwashing enforcement has tightened: claims must match the paperwork. The upside is credibility — retail buyers, especially in the EU and UK, increasingly ask for FSC in RFQs as a default requirement.
At KUBO Paper, FSC-certified stock is available across our board range; mention it at quotation and the claim is documented from the paper mill to your invoice.
FAQ
Does FSC packaging cost more?
Modestly — certified board typically runs a few percent above standard. The bigger cost is documentation discipline, which a certified factory absorbs. For most buyers the premium is small compared to the marketing and retail-access value.
Is FSC the only credible forest certification?
PEFC is the other major global system and is fully legitimate (it endorses national schemes). Some markets recognize one more readily than the other; FSC has the strongest consumer recognition in the EU and US.
