Drawer Boxes: The Slide-Open Packaging That Doubles as Storage

By KUBO Paper · · 2 min read

The drawer box — an outer sleeve with an inner tray that slides out — turns opening your product into a small ceremony. It's the format people keep on a dresser long after the product is used, which is exactly why brands love it.

Construction

Two components: the sleeve (a four-wall rigid or folding structure, open on two opposite ends) and the tray (the drawer, often with a thumb notch, ribbon pull, or cut-out finger grip). In rigid construction both parts are grayboard wrapped in printed paper. The quality test is the slide: smooth, with slight resistance, no rattle, no scraping.

Where drawer boxes shine

Cost and MOQ notes

A rigid drawer box is effectively two boxes, so expect pricing accordingly — roughly 1.5–2× a comparable lid-and-base rigid box, with more handwork at assembly. MOQs around 500–1,000 pcs are typical. For budget-sensitive runs, a folding-carton drawer (paperboard sleeve and tray, flat-shipped) delivers the interaction at a fraction of the cost, at the cost of some presence.

Design details that elevate the format

1. A ribbon or fabric pull on the tray — small cost, big perceived value. 2. A contrasting tray color inside a neutral sleeve: the reveal is the moment. 3. A blind deboss or foil on the sleeve edge only — restraint is the format's language. 4. Internal inserts (paperboard cross-dividers, foam, velvet pans) planned with the tray, not after.

Because alignment between sleeve and tray determines whether the box slides or fights, this is a sample-first product. Send inner product dimensions and weights; we'll engineer the clearances — too tight and it jams, too loose and it rattles.

FAQ

Can drawer boxes ship assembled?

Rigid ones, yes — they don't fold. They ship nested (sleeves and trays stacked separately to save volume, assembled at packing) which keeps freight manageable.

What holds the drawer from falling out?

Design choice: a full-height back wall inside the sleeve, an internal stop tab, or simply tray depth less than sleeve depth. Tell the factory how far you want the drawer to pull out and they'll build the stop accordingly.
